WHAT IS UBUNTU?
Many people know what Ubuntu is and some people don't. Just in case you do not know what it is; It's an Operating System(OS), like Windows or Mac and so on. Ubuntu is a complete desktop linux OS, freely available with both community and professional support.
You might have already heard of Linux before. It is an operating system on it's own but there are many flavors of Linux being that it is an Open Source OS.
As a result of this there are many organizations that specialize in creating their own version of the Linux OS. Ubuntu is a very popular flavor of Linux and I will be talking basically about its features and what makes it special in this article.
The Ubuntu OS is made up of a community built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customize and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.

Some of the values Ubuntu stands for:
  • Ubuntu will always be free of charge
  • Ubuntu includes the very best in translations and accessibility infrastructure the Free Software community has to offer
  • Ubuntu is always shipped in stable and regular release cycles
  • Ubuntu is entirely committed to the principles of open source software development

Ubuntu includes more than 1000 pieces of software, starting with the Linux kernel version 2.6 and GNOME 2.30, and covering every standard desktop application from word processing and spreadsheet applications to internet access applications, web server software, email software, programming languages and tools and of course several games.
The Ubuntu Project is sponsored by Canonical Ltd.
